Abstract:
Recent advances in mass spectrometry (MS)-based measurements offer direct analysis of metabolic molecules per se, enabling us to determine contents of multiple metabolites through directly reading out their concentration and metabolic “fluxes” which represents the rate of turnover of metabolites through specific metabolic pathways. Application of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI)-imaging-MS to frozen tissue slices combined with metabolomics in the adjacent tissue sections allowed us to quantify and visualize many metabolites within tissues in a region-specific manner. This seminar focuses on my journey seeking to understand the pathogenesis of heart disease using metabolomics.
