IMEG Joint Usage/ Research Project FY2017 Call for Proposals (Research/ Travel Support)

The Institute of Molecular Embryology and Genetics (IMEG) plays a crucial role in Kumamoto University as a joint usage/research center and an important part of our work is the exchange of research achievements, technologies, analysis techniques, and information with researchers outside of the institute. This year, to further that goal, we call for proposals for the “FY2017 IMEG Joint Usage/Research Project” which will fund outstanding research projects and share the cutting-edge facilities and resources, including the data that we have accumulated, of our institute. Novel and innovative proposals, particularly from young researchers, are sought-after, and unique proposals capable of being carried out on a small budget are also very welcomed.

Awardees will be given the same access to our common equipment, which includes a mass spectrometer, a next generation sequencer, a single cell PCR, InCell, Analyzer, and an automatic in situ hybridization system, as their host scientist. Charges for the use of the common equipment may be deducted from the research funding award.
For more information, please refer to the link below and consult a prospective IMEG faculty member who will be your host scientist.

1.Joint Research Areas

  1. Developmental Regulation
To elucidate embryonic and regenerative mechanisms, as well as mechanisms of human disease outbreak/defense from the molecular, cellular, and tissue perspectives. (E.g., epigenetics, AAA family protein function, cell-to-cell communication mechanisms, DNA damage repair mechanisms)
  2. Stem Cell Research
To elucidate control mechanisms of ES, iPS, and tissue stem cells, and to develop them for regenerative medicine. (E.g., modulation of stem cells, cell fate control, cell differentiation mechanisms)
  3. Organogenesis
To elucidate basic principles of control in the formation of the three-dimensional structures of human organs. (E.g., tissue & organ formation mechanisms in animal models such as genetically engineered mice)

Multidisciplinary research is also welcomed.

2.Applicant Eligibility

  1. The applicant must be a researcher at a university or public research institute as of April 1, 2017.
*Graduate students are not eligible to apply, but are eligible to participate as project members.
  2. Awardees have to come to IMEG at least once to perform research activities with their host scientist. Host scientists must be IMEG faculty members.
  3. The same or similar research project cannot exceed 5 years.
  4. If the project leader is a researcher at Kumamoto University, project collaborators must include at least one researcher outside Kumamoto University. Please note that, in consideration of the purpose of this funding to stimulate cooperative research, only a few projects will be awarded to researchers employed by Kumamoto University .

3.Joint Research Project Duration

  1. One year, starting from April 1st, 2017 through March 31st, 2018.

4.Research Funding

This includes costs incurred for traveling to and from IMEG, and hotel accommodations. Names of collaborators, including graduate students, who may come to IMEG to perform research activities should be written on the application form. Any expenses incurred by IMEG host scientists to perform related research activities are also accepted. Awardees must give a seminar to IMEG members at least once per fiscal year.

5.How to Apply
