Travel grants for young researchers from Development

The Company of Biologists, which publishes Development, kindly offers some support to IMEG (and other departments at Kumamoto), both for travel to other labs (either within or outside Japan – up to £2500 per application) and for conference travel (up to £1000). They extend this beyond IMEG to any researchers working in a field relevant to the Company’s journals.

共同研究拠点事業による国内他大学からの支援には旅費が含まれる場合があります。二重にならないよう十分ご注意ください。
The support by Joint Usage/Research Centers may cover travel expenses. Please carefully avoid receiving dual supports.

Q1. What is the difference between Letter of status from Head of Department and Letter of support from Supervisor? Our institute constitutes of several laboratories, which are identical to departments. In most cases, the supervisor will be a professor of the lab (=department).

A1. The Letter of Status from the Head of the Department includes who the applicant is and describes the work they are doing and how long they have been at that institution. The Letter from the Supervisor is to state the reason for visit to the host laboratory etc. If the Head and the Supervisor are the same person, the information can be included in one letter.

Q2. In Japan, assistant professors are not independent positions.

A2. We would be happy to receive applications from Assistant Professors.
